I wish I could give this place no stars. The place is filthy. It's obvious they do not clean it. There is dust and dirt everywhere and there are never any antibacterial wipes, so the machines must be a breeding ground of filth. Staff do not acknowledge anyone when you walk in and are always chatting or on their cell phones. Personal trainers are training their clients right on top of you. No matter what time of day I go it is packed out and prevents me from doing a proper workout because I can't get on any machines.
Retro Fitness is pretty good, but not amongst the best Fitness centers on Staten Island.
This gym is a SCAM!! I signed up for 6 months of personal training. When I reached the end of my training, I was told I signed up for 12 months. I DID NOT sign up for 12 months. It was impossible to cancel! I sucked it up and continued training; however, scheduling sessions was such a hassle. Then, I was doubled billed in a span of a few days and they refused to reimburse me! I continued with this horrible experience, sent my 60 day certified letter to cancel and then decided to pay off the remaining balance to get away from them. Management is so rude and disrespectful. It's small, crowded and extremely filthy! It smells like filth! Bathrooms are always broken. Wipe dispensers are always empty. This gym needs to close! DO NOT join! Retro Fitness on Hylan has been an absolute pleasure! It's huge, clean, has friendly staff, and a huge variety of classes!
Fraudulent charges, thieves (literally), poorly maintained. The only reason this gym stays open is because of their never-ending fraudulent charges. There is no way to cancel the gym even if you follow all directions. You will need a lawyer to fight it. I went through the entire 5 month process (certified letter, intent, proof, etc.) back and forth for a long time now and unfortunately it is hopeless. Read the contract if you are debating to sign up- you are signing up with ABC Financial, a collections agency that does not take phone calls only certified mail. I waited the year to cancel when my initial period was over and still battling for more than 6 months trying to cancel (after my obligation has been completed!). There are hundreds of loopholes they have in their contract to continue billing you forever plus the annual fee. You've been warned, STAY AWAY!
I also had a horrible experience with Retro Fitness. Thank God, that I signed up with Planet Fitness. Retro Fitness is next to me, but I would rather drive 10 min more to Planet Fitness.
